There are 3 steps for safe road travel for any child:

1. Selecting
a car safety seat for the child's individual needs.

2. Positioning
Securing the child in the car safety seat following the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Installing
the car safety seat correctly in the vehicle following both the car seat instructions and the car owner's manual.

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)

A professional organization of pediatricians involved with all aspects of child development, including injury prevention. It has published transportation-related policy statements and offers car safety seat shopping guides for conventional and special needs car seats and safety restraints.

Automotive Safety Program

A child passenger safety injury prevention program based at the Indiana University School of Medicine. It provides education, training, and resources on child passenger safety and transporting children with special health care needs. For more information contact 317-274-2977.

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

This child passenger safety web site features videos on car seat installation and provides information about buying a safe car and special travel circumstances.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

NHTSA is the federal agency that sets national standards for occupant protection, which includes car safety seats. It also provides information, statistical data, technical assistance and educational materials relating to child passenger safety. Car seat recall information is available on their website as well as a locator for car seat installation check points. There are regional offices throughout the country. National Easter Seals

A national organization with several local affiliate agencies across the nation including in Ohio, that provide services and resources for families and individuals with special health care needs. Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center

This organization works to improve the independence, usability and safety for individuals who travel seated in a wheelchair. Provides good information on travel safety standards for wheelchairs (ANSI/RESNA WC19).

Safe Kids Worldwide

This international organization sponsors state and local injury prevention programs, as well as develops safety campaigns and materials. There are 17 Ohio regional affiliates dedicated to preventing unintentional injury to children. This organization sponsors the national child passenger safety technician training and certification.

Safe Ride News

Safe Ride News provides current information about child passenger safety issues through a newsletter, web site and various publications and electronic media including CPS information sheets, the LATCH manual and a CPS school bus manual.

SafetyBeltSafe is a national organization dedicated to child passenger safety. Their site provides training, education and resources on car safety seats and child passenger safety. Car seat recall information is also available.

Tech Update

This site has information about transit wheelchairs.They
