Tips for Securing A Child

Keep the following tips in mind when positioning and securing a child in a car safety seat or specialized safety restraint:

  1. Always work with a physical therapist and/or health care practitioner to ensure proper consideration of the child's medical condition and positioning needs.
  2. Ask for the assistance of a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.
  3. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  4. Never modify a car safety seat or safety restraint. This may compromise the performance of the car seat.
  5. Never place anything behind/underneath a child in a car safety seat.
  6. The shoulder harness must be snug (snug means not being able to pinch excess webbing lengthwise at the child's collarbone area).
  7. The correct set of shoulder harness slots must be used for the weight and size of the child as well as the facing direction (forward or rear) of the car safety seat (refer to the seat's instructions).
