Basic Transportation
Guidelines
When traveling with a child who has a special medical
condition, the
following guidelines will help make transportation safe and easier.
- Make sure the car safety seat or safety restraint is installed correctly,
following the car seat manufacturer's instructions and the car owner's
manual.
- Get it checked by a certified Child Passenger
Safety Technician .
- Be sure to read all instructions.
- Keep travel to a minimum.
- Make frequent stops.
- Have an adult, other than the driver, monitor the child.
- Have enough power for medical equipment (i.e., two times the distance
of expected travel).
- Position the child in the back seat
of the vehicle.
- Have an emergency medical care plan prepared ahead
of time.
- Secure all medical equipment including monitors,
oxygen, crutches, wheelchairs, etc.
- Use of a tether is recommended,
if not required, by
most
forward
facing car safety seats and safety restraints. If
the child
is
over 48 pounds, follow the car seat or safety restraint
instructions.
- Adhere to weight limitations as noted by the car
safety seat
or
safety restraint if using latch to install a car seat or
special restraint.
